EmitenTrust.com Combination expands health system alignment models for independent cardiologists

DENVER, Oct. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- CardioOne, the leading partner for physician-owned cardiology practices, today announced it is joining forces with CardioSphere and welcoming Midwest Cardiovascular Institute (MCI) to its network, extending platform reach and deepening health system alignment models.

This combination strengthens CardioOne's ability to help cardiologists transition from hospital and corporate employment into independent practice, while expanding how partner medical groups collaborate with premier health systems, including cardiovascular service line co-management, professional services arrangements, joint-venture ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and group practice enterprise structures. Together, CardioOne and CardioSphere enable cardiologists to reclaim their independence at greater scale and empower health systems to preserve and grow high-performing cardiovascular programs without the rising economic pressures of current employment structures.

A cornerstone of the partnership is MCI, located in the western suburbs of Chicago and one of the Midwest's leading independent cardiovascular practices, joining CardioOne's network. With the addition of MCI, CardioOne delivers operational, financial, technological, and clinical services to more than 110 providers nationally, the majority of whom left hospital or corporate employment to launch physician-owned practices.

"The traditional employment model in cardiology needs to evolve, and health systems need more sustainable ways to partner with physicians," said Mark Goodwin, MD, President of MCI. "CardioOne provides a compelling path for physicians to regain their autonomy, become operationally efficient, all while providing leadership and clinical services in the same hospital where they practice today. This combination significantly strengthens our ability to help cardiologists take back control of their future," said Jasen Gundersen, MD, CEO and Co-Founder of CardioOne. "Cardiologists already understand why independence works for them — what has historically held them back is the fear of losing the relationships they've spent their careers building with hospitals. CardioSphere gives CardioOne unique clinical operating know-how and health system partnership experience that makes our value proposition clearer to hospital leadership: independence and alignment are the same strategy, not opposing ones."

Dr. Goodwin and Jacob Corbell, former CEO of MCI, founded CardioSphere in 2024 and began working with Cathie Biga, past President of the American College of Cardiology to develop solutions for the current challenges in cardiology. "I've spent my career making the case that physician-owned cardiology and strong hospital alignment are not mutually exclusive," said Biga, who joins CardioOne as Chief Strategy Officer. "We put a real operating platform behind that argument, at a scale that can change how health systems think about their cardiovascular service lines."

CardioOne will continue to operate under its existing brand and leadership, with its focus unchanged: giving cardiologists the technology, operational support, and growth infrastructure to build successful independent practices. As part of the combination, Mark Goodwin, MD, Cathie Biga, and Jacob Corbell will join the CardioOne team.
