Solopreneurs Gain Greater Access to Corporate-Level Health Coverage as Lettuce Expands Benefits Ahead of Open Enrollment
EmitenTrust.com Lettuce extends coverage to solopreneurs across 21 states, adds dental, vision, and voluntary accident options, and introduces business insurance for solos
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Lettuce Financial, the fintech platform giving businesses-of-one the corporate-level advantages of the world's best companies, today announced an expansion of its benefits suite ahead of open enrollment. The company is adding six new states to its coverage map for solos, bringing the total number of states to 21 ahead of open enrollment in November. The new states include Alabama, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. Lettuce is also adding dental, vision, and voluntary accident plans, so solopreneurs no longer have to trade quality protection for the freedom to work on their own.
The expansion comes as solopreneurs brace for another costly open enrollment season, with premiums on ACA marketplaces projected to rise up to 25% in 2027, an increase that solo business owners face without an employer to subsidize the cost. Marketplace coverage also asks more of enrollees when they need care. The average marketplace deductible reached a record $3,786 in 2026, roughly double the $1,886 average for workers with employer coverage. Beyond cost, PPO plans, which offer more flexibility in choosing doctors and accessing out-of-network care, have also become increasingly difficult to find on ACA marketplaces.
Lettuce runs the first professional employer organization (PEO) built exclusively for one-person S-corps. It pools owners into a single large group instead of pricing each business on its own health history. Through the PEO, Lettuce subscribers can choose plans and coverages that are typically reserved for organizations with many employees. That gives members more bargaining power with carriers, steadier rates from year to year, lower co-pays, and access to more doctors than most marketplace plans allow. The PPO plans offered through Lettuce have a $0 deductible, representing a significant savings over the majority of marketplace plans.
Traditional PEOs, used by more than 230,000 small businesses to offer employee benefits, are built for companies with larger headcounts. Lettuce created its own PEO exclusively for businesses of one, allowing solopreneurs to participate in a PEO model traditionally reserved for larger employers.
It's the latest expansion of Lettuce's integrated suite of services that equips solopreneurs with the systems and protections salaried employees take for granted. With benefits built into the platform, accounting, taxes, retirement, and health benefits work together instead of across disconnected tools.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that America's solopreneurs generated $1.8 trillion in revenue in 2023, and their ranks are growing more than twice as fast as businesses with employees. For them, the healthcare access problem is real. According to Lettuce's Solopreneur Perspective report, 14% report having no health coverage at all, and more than a third of those earning $71,000 to $150,000 say they're unhappy with their current options.
"Healthcare is where solopreneurs are constantly forced to make significant compromises. Being a business-of-one shouldn't mean settling for less when it comes to benefits," said Ran Harpaz, Lettuce founder and CEO. "The health insurance system was built for companies with many employees, not for one-person businesses. Lettuce is changing that by giving businesses of one access to the same quality of health coverage and benefits that the world's best companies offer their employees."
Lettuce's benefits offerings also extend beyond healthcare. Following its acquisition of Carry earlier this year, Lettuce now provides members access to a Solo 401(k), a tax-advantaged retirement account designed to help them save more and build long-term wealth. The company also offers business insurance for one-person businesses, providing protection against liability and operational risks.
Lettuce health coverage is available to eligible members in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia.
